"This project, we did it specifically to let culture meet us. You can see from the block it’s different kind of cultural performances, different mix of groups. So artists started talking and finding commonality."
Stoop Stories contributor Phoenix Robles stopped by Lincoln Pl. in Crown Heights Brooklyn for the “Greenest Block in Brooklyn” Block Party. Phoenix sat on the stoop with Miss Perri and Miss Althea, members of P.L.A.N.T., a community-centered group that intertwines art and gardening.
P.L.A.N.T. is an acronym for “Preserving Lincoln’s Abundant Natural Treasures.” Perri Edwards and Miss Althea Joseph have been responsible for gathering neighbors and utilizing their artistic abilities, and green thumbs, to help Lincoln Place become this urban oasis. Answering the Brooklyn Botanic Garden call, P.L.A.N.T. beat 100 entries to win the greenest block!
Walking down Lincoln Pl. is like walking into your very own community Narnia. There are so many gems and beautiful pieces of art intertwined within the leaves and vines, planted by community members. The most beautiful aspect is the diversity and unity of the community, and the love they genuinely have for one another truly keeps the green-loving energy of this community alive.
If you’re ever in Crown Heights take a stroll down Lincoln Pl. between Nostrand & New York, and have a chat with Miss Althea and Miss Perri, they’ll be happy to have you.
